Papis flies into the top 10 during first day of practice for Miller Lite 250.
WEST ALLIS, Wis.--Max Papis uncorked his best time on his penultimate lap during afternoon practice on the first day of action at The Milwaukee Mile.
Papis ran 22.791 seconds around the 1.032-mile oval, which was a tenth faster than his morning time. Track conditions grew warmer in the afternoon, and Papis and the Sigma Autosport crew patiently waited for the right time to improve.
As a result, Papis was the 10th fastest overall in the combined practice (ninth in the afternoon session) in his #22 Sigma Autosport Ford-Cosworth/Lola.
Lately, running on an oval has not been an issue with Papis as the Italian driver completed more than 400 laps while taking part in the Indianapolis 500 earlier this month. Add on another 145 laps that Papis completed today in addition to his laps at the last CART FedEx race in Motegi, Japan, and he has accumulated nearly 700 oval laps.
Final qualifying for the Miller Lite 250 begins at 1:45 p.m. Central Time.
"We have been out of the car for a long time and we focused in the morning on trying to go fast, but this afternoon we tried mainly long runs. I think we might be the only car that hasn't done any testing at all between the last race and now, so I feel like we should be pretty happy with how we did today. We're closer to the race pace than qualifying, but I think we still have a day to work on it and I'm going to really focus a lot on our race setup because that's the most important. If we go faster we will scare some people."
On Qualifying: "It's still fairly important and will definitely make your life easier for the race, but the race is where it counts and I feel like we've been working hard towards our race pace. We are very close to getting a good race pace, which is important because with 250 laps in the race, it's definitely not a sprint race at all." -- Max Papis, Sigma Autosport Driver
