Kenny Brack scores historic win
Lola Cars International Ltd. has become the first chassis manufacturer in CART FedEx Championship Series history to achieve 100 CART victories.
Kenny Brack scored "Brack to Brack" victories, following his break-through win in Japan last month. Brack, who started on pole in his #8 Shell Lola/Ford, due to his leadership in the point standings, led the most laps and led Michael Andretti's #39 Reynard/Honda to the checkered flags by 1.307-seconds.
Lola finished the 2000 CART series on a high note with Christian Fittipaldi's victory at California Speedway -- one of seven Lola wins in 2000 -- and started the 2001 season in dominant style with Cristiano da Matta's win in Mexico. Lola continued to impress, as last year's Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year, 35-year-old Kenny Brack qualified on the front row of the grid for the first four rounds of the 2001 season. Brack nabbed his first CART win at Twin Ring Motegi, moving him two points ahead of Helio Castroneves in the Championship standings. Underlining the Company's top form, a Lola driver has led the 2001 championship from the onset.
Statistically, 2000 was Lola's most successful year in Champ Car racing since it won the CART title with Nigel Mansell and Newman-Haas Racing in 1993. The 1992 Formula One World Champion seamlessly made the transition from Formula One to Champ Car racing and became the only reigning F1 champion to also hold the PPG Cup title.
Driver of the Century Mario Andretti gave Lola its first win in 1983 at Elkhart Lake, in a Ford-Cosworth-powered Newman-Haas entry. In 1991, his son Michael notched Lola's 50th victory in Portland, also with Newman-Haas Racing. The Illinois-based team has a great history with Lola Cars, reinforced by the fact that it has scored 55 of Lola's 100 wins.
"I'm extremely pleased to be part of Lola's 100th CART win," said Team Rahal owner Bobby Rahal. "Lola cars have been a major part of my racing career. I drove a Lola T290 sports car to my first SCCA national championship in 1974, and one of my first Formula Atlantic cars was a Lola T360. I won my last two CART series championships, in 1987 and 1992, in Lola Champ Cars. So it is fitting that we can bring Lola its 100th victory this year. It is exciting to give Lola this landmark achievement with Team Rahal and Kenny Brack. Lola cars have accomplished a tremendous feat in our sport and the Lola staff should be commended for its continued success."
"I feel very honored to have helped Lola reach this impressive goal," Brack acknowledged. "The Lola car has been a great car in the past and this year, already I see the Lola being the premier car for the CART championship. I just hope I can bring another championship to Lola this year."
"This is a great day for Lola," enthused Daniel Partel, president of Lola Cars International Inc.. "I would particularly like to congratulate winner Kenny Brack and Team Rahal."
"I'm absolutely thrilled! Everyone at Lola has worked incredibly hard for this and we will, of course, continue to challenge for the coveted Constructors' title this season," said David Bowes, managing director of Lola Cars International Ltd.
"One hundred CART race wins is a fantastic achievement for Lola Cars International. I'd like to congratulate everyone involved," noted Martin Birrane, chief executive officer of Lola Cars International Ltd.
"This is fantastic," designer Ben Bowlby exulted. "Every one of these wins has been hard-earned, and I think it's great that Juan Montoya took this race for us last year and opened the door for Kenny to do the same in 2001."
The FedEx Championship series takes a hiatus from ovals and heads to the temporary street course at Belle Isle for the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit on June 17th.
