Fernandez flies in Milwaukee practice.
Honda-powered Adrian Fernandez set the pace today in opening practice for Sunday's Miller Lite 250, leading the CART FedEx Championship Series field here at the Milwaukee Mile. The veteran team owner/driver was a full half-second quicker than his next closest competitor, a large margin in the competitive Champ Car series. Fernandez also qualified on the pole at the season-opening race this year in Monterrey, Mexico.
The next 11 drivers were all grouped within three-tenths of a second of one another, with the Team KOOL Green duo of Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti seventh and eighth on the day. Tony Kanaan was 11th in his new Lola chassis, with Shinji Nakano in the second Fernandez Racing entry just behind. Michael Andretti made a big jump up the time sheets late in the day today to wind up 13th for Team Motorola.
Highlights of today's activities will televised in the United States on Speed Channel's "CART Friday Night" tonight, starting at 10:30 p.m. EDT. Action continues tomorrow with final practice at 9:30 a.m. followed by single-car qualifying, televised live on Speed starting at 2:00 p.m. EDT.
Adrian Fernandez (#51 Tecate/Telmex/Quaker State Fernandez Racing Honda) fastest in practice today: "The car felt fantastic today, we just had to make a few little changes to adapt to the track conditions today and that was all. We used the whole month of May to catch up on all the little things we've been missing as a team, and I think it has helped us. I hope we can keep it up all weekend and bring Fernandez Racing its first CART victory this weekend."
