Milwaukee, WI (May 22, 1998) Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) posted the fastest time Friday morning during the opening round of practice for Sunday's Miller Lite 200 at The Milwaukee Mile.

Andretti circled the 1.032 mile oval at an average speed of 178.985 miles per hour (20.757 seconds), and had the second-fastest practice speed of 178.016 mph (20.870 seconds) in his secondary car as well.

Two-time defending polesitter Paul Tracy (KOOL Reynard Honda) was third fastest at 177.820 miles per hour (20.893 seconds) followed by Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart Swift Ford) at 177.625 miles per hour (20.916 seconds) and Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda).at 177.481 mph (20.933 seconds).

The scheduled one and one-half hour session was cut short by approximately 35 minutes after Fittipaldi made contact with the Turn 2 wall. He was awake and alert when he was removed from the car and was transported by ground to Milwaukee County General Hospital for a precautionary CAT scan and precautionary x-rays of his cervical spine.

Repairs to the wall could not be completed in time for the afternoon practice session. Indy Lights and Toyota Atlantic practice and qualifying sessions were also canceled.
