Lexington, OH, Aug 13, 2000 --- Walker Racing rookie Shinji Nakano had moved up to 16th position at today's Miller Lite 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Course before an off on Turn 15 ended his day early. Shinji had just completed his second pit stop in the #5 avex/Reynard/Honda/Firestone car and had re-entered the racecourse when he over-steered the car off-course into the grass. When the CART safety team attempted to tow him back to the pits, the towrope got caught in the suspension of the car and damaged it beyond immediate repair. We had a problem on the first pit stop because of an air jack receptacle failure which affected the fueling of the car," said Team Manager Rob Edwards. "From that point on we had to adopt a three-stop strategy to complete the race. After our second stop, Shinji had an off on the course and when he was being towed back to the pits, the rope got caught in the suspension and broke a steering arm. That effectively put us out for the day." Shinji had qualified in 20th position for the race at the 2.258-mile permanent road course and clocked a fast lap time of 1:08.792, 118.165 mph Sunday's warm-up session, fast enough to put him in seventh place before the start of the race. "The results do not do justice to our weekend," said owner Derrick Walker. "We had a good car for the race and were managing our fuel mileage very well. Too bad it ended the way it did -- On the good news front, we are getting closer with a car that suits Shinji and we are making some progress that will soon start to show." Round 14 of the CART FedEx Championship Series will take place at Road America next weekend. The Motorola 220 will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday, Aug. 20 from 4- 6 p.m. on ABC. Walker Racing's corporate sponsor partners are avex, Alpine, Mitsuba, SpeedWRX.com, Dell Computer Corporation, NGK, St. Elmo Steakhouse, Honda, Reynard and Firestone.
