WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR

Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) earned the first oval track victory of his FedEx Championship Series career by driving to a 31.737 second triumph over Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) at the 1997 U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota at Michigan Speedway. Zanardi averaged 167.044 miles per hour for the 250-lap event and led a race-high 104 laps, including the final 31. Blundell's runner-up showing was his third podium finish in four events, including victories at Portland and Toronto. Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda) finished third to score his fifth podium finish in seven starts. The race featured 13 lead changes among nine drivers. Zanardi's victory enabled him to take the PPG Cup points lead from Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes), who finished fourth. Zanardi exited Michigan with 127 points to 121 for Tracy and 108 for third-place de Ferran.
