Herdez-backed driver Michel Jourdain Jr. made the most of the one qualifying lap he was able to make by taking 22nd place in the first qualifying session for the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit. His best and only lap was posted in 1'17.821 (at 108.526 Mph.).

Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #16, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "The car was ok. in the morning. We still had some work to do, mainly to cure the oversteer. The car was damaged in the practice, mainly the rear wing and a wishbone. The crew worked very hard to fix the car and eventually, I was just 10 minutes late for qualifying. Unfortunately, the car still had something broken in the suspension and with 8 minutes to go (in the qualifying session), we decided to use the spare car. Considering that I only completed one good lap, it was not that bad our time."

Joe Ward, Team Manager, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "We only had one timed-lap in qualifying. We had slightly damaged the primary car this morning, I thought we found everything, but we found some hidden damage. So, we opted to go to the back-up car. The qualifying session was a very red-flagged session. The flags were brought out by various drivers. We got one timed-lap out of it and he (Michel Jourdain Jr.) was able to do a 1'17" lap. That was pretty good on his part. We hope it doesn't rain tomorrow, so we can better our times."
