Herdez-backed driver Michel Jourdain Jr., after experiencing some difficulties and having very little track time, was placed in the provisional starting grid for The Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by Firstar on the 23rd position, with a time of 1'60.073 at 126.206 Mph. achieved with his back-up car.

Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #16, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "We had lots of problems all day long and we did very few laps. We had engine problems and we were penalized because the car stalled on the track. We had to use our back-up car to qualify, which is not that bad and we only have to work on a few things. Also, towards the end of the qualifying session I made a mistake and I broke the front wing entering to the main straight. Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to fix it and this limited our track time."

Joe Ward, Team Manager, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "We lost the large majority of the morning practice due to a misfire in the primary car, we stopped twice out on track, the second time resulting in an 8-minute penalty. We got the back-up car out and proceeded with the practice although there were several black flags during the session, which limited our track time. This gave us a very big disadvantage going into qualifying. We virtually had to do our morning practice session during the qualifying session, which resulted in a lot of changes that had to be made to the car. But we are going in the right direction for tomorrow morning."
