Franchitti, Kanaan on the second row in Mexico.
Mo Nunn Racing's Tony Kanaan led the Honda effort today in final qualifying for Sunday's Grand Premio Telmex-Gigante here in Mexico City. But in generally slower conditions today, the Brazilian moved up just one position overall, and will start fourth in tomorrow's CART FedEx Championship Series season finale.
Starting alongside Kanaan, on the inside of the second row, will be Dario Franchitti. The Team KOOL Green driver was one of several drivers who ran faster in yesterday's first qualifying round, most likely the result of cooler temperatures on Friday. In today's session, Franchitti's qualifying effort was cut short when he slid off on oil in the turn nine 'esses' and made heavy contact with the barriers, fortunately without injury.
Teammate Paul Tracy had his qualifying run halted by mechanical problems, while series debutant Luis Diaz was forced into his backup car after transmission problems with his primary car. He will start 19th in place of the injured Adrian Fernandez. Michael Andretti moved up three places and will start 10th, with Shinji Nakano 13th.
Tony Kanaan (#10 Pioneer/Mo Nunn Racing Honda) 2nd fastest qualifier today, 4th overall: "I had a great car today, good enough to end up on the front row, I think. But we were unable to make the most of it, so instead we're starting fourth. After the last restart, I thought for sure we would have one more chance (for the pole), but then we went 'red' again (stopping the session) for Cristiano da Matta's spin. When the track went green again, there wasn't enough time left in the session to complete a lap."
