Martinez Qualifies Ninth for His First Champ Car Race
Mexico City, Mexico -- November 11th, 2006 -- David Martinez continued to impress today at the Gran Premio Telmex Presented by Banamex by placing his #3Telmex/INDECK machine ninth in the grid for his first ever Champ Car race. It was solid run for the Mexican rookie who spent the last two years developing his skills in the Champ Car Atlantic Championship and who only has a total of three days of experience driving Champ Cars.
Indy 500 Champion Buddy Rice had a strong run during morning practice that placed him comfortably in the Top 10 but qualifying did not deliver the same results as Rice struggled with his red alternate tires and was only able to achieve the 14th position on the grid. Sunday's race will also mark his debut in the Champ Car World Series.
"Well it's great to be in the top ten in my first ever race but in a way it's a little disappointing because I think we could've been a little quicker. This morning we were inside the Top 7 and we definitely had the speed to maybe even break the Top 5 today. On my fast lap I came into Turn 3 and saw a yellow flag but I kept pushing, unfortunately somebody had sprayed some oil on the track and when I hit it the car got really loose and I lost almost three tenths. The Telmex car has been great all weekend and it just keeps getting faster with every adjustment we make, I'm also getting faster with every lap so I'm really looking forward to the race tomorrow because I think we are going to be very strong."
"Overall it was on OK day. The car has been pretty good all weekend and during our first stint in qualifying with the black tires we were very fast. For our second stint we decided to put on the Red Bridgestone Potenzas and we just couldn't get the most speed out of them. I really thought that I was going to be able to go much faster with the softer tires but we just didn't improve as much as we hoped and that dropped us back a bit. We should have a pretty good car for the race, and the Forsythe Team is the best in the business when it comes to pit stops so I think it will be a good race for us."
