Fernandez Optimistic on Chances of Competing in Mexico City
Nakano Looking for Good Results in Season Finale

Adrian Fernandez is two steps away from one of his lifelong dreams - competing in a Champ Car race in his hometown of Mexico City. Fernandez underwent another CT scan this morning (November 11) on two compression fractures of the second and third thoracic vertebrae resulting from a multi-car incident at the Honda Indy 300 in Surfers Paradise, Australia, on October 27. Dr. Terry Trammell, CART's Chief Orthopedic Consultant, will review the results tomorrow. If no changes have occurred since his initial CT scans in Australia, Fernandez will be cleared to drive. Both Fernandez and Trammell are optimistic.

Step Two involves getting behind the wheel. Fernandez will attempt to drive in the first practice session on Friday. As a back-up plan, young Mexican talent Luis Diaz will be on hand. Diaz, who finished fourth in the Atlantic championship this year, completed a test with the team last week in preparation.

Shinji Nakano is hoping that luck will reign in the season finale of the CART FedEx Championship Series. After posting a string of eight points-paying finishes in the middle of the season, including a career-best Champ Car finish of fourth in Toronto, Nakano has failed to finish four of the past five events due to mechanical gremlins and contact during the race in England.

Adrian Fernandez, Owner/Driver -- #51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Honda/Lola/Bridgestone:

"Obviously I am very excited about this race, and I am optimistic that I will be able to drive. This is the track where I took my first laps in a race car, and where I competed for many years. To be able to race here again in my hometown, after so many years of racing outside Mexico City, will be very special, especially after the work they have done on the track. After so many years of trying to get an event here, finally we have one. It is going to be huge.

"It goes without saying that this race means a lot to me - my family is here, my friends, everyone - and also my sponsors. Obviously I would like to be in better shape than I am right now. If I do drive in the end, which I feel very positive, I will give my best even though I am not in the best shape with these two accidents within the last few months. I have a lot of faith. Hopefully, we can get a good result in what has been a difficult year and that would make me very happy. If we could come away with a victory or a podium, that would be very special for us."
