Potenza Race Tires Supplied: Bridgestone delivered more than 900 Potenza race tires for use this weekend. All were produced at the Bridgestone/Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio.
* Dry-condition tires ("slicks"):
Each car receives up to seven sets of slicks (28 tires) for the race weekend, to use as its team sees fit in the practice, qualifying and race sessions. The tire Bridgestone Motorsport engineers selected for this weekend is the mid-range version of Bridgestone's three road-course tire specifications. This spec was utilized successfully earlier this season on the wide-open runways of Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport.
* Wet-condition tires ("rains"):
Bridgestone supplies each car up to four new sets of grooved rain tires per weekend on road and street courses, as needed. In addition, teams may bring two sets of rain tires per car received at a previous event but not used. Since Bridgestone utilizes a single wet-tire spec in 2002, tires can be carried over to another event without a performance variance. CART's decision permitting teams to bring additional rain sets assures them a sufficient number should wet conditions persist on a race weekend.
The Official Tire of CART -- with Higher Aspirations for 2003:
Bridgestone will complete its first year of competition in the CART Champ Car Series this weekend at Mexico, wrapping up a successful season that saw the manufacturer supply all teams as the Official Tire of CART. Bridgestone announced Nov. 3 it would step up to become the Presenting Sponsor of the series in 2003 while remaining the exclusive tire supplier. While new to CART this year, Bridgestone boasts a winning racing heritage spanning four decades in all types of motorsports.
Al Speyer, Executive Director, Bridgestone Motorsport:
"Mexico City provides the perfect climax to Bridgestone's debut season in CART. The opportunity to showcase the Potenza tires in front of what may be the largest crowd ever for a CART event is exciting and humbling at the same time. We're looking at this weekend as a sendoff to the 2003 season when Bridgestone takes on the added responsibility and profile as Presenting Sponsor for the Champ Car Series. While we are undoubtedly eagerly awaiting that transition, we are also prepared to enjoy an electrifying final race weekend of the 2002 season. The anticipation for the Mexico City race has everyone in the paddock revved up to go. Combined with the gigantic and fervent crowds we're expecting, it all adds up to a highly memorable weekend for all involved."
