ELKHART LAKE TEST
Marlboro Team Penske went straight from the one-mile oval at Chicago Motor Speedway to the four-mile permanent road course at Elkhart Lake's Road America to test in preparation for the upcoming Motorola 220 (August 18-20). On the first day of the test eleven drivers representing eight different teams took to the track with Marlboro Team Penske driver Gil de Ferran setting the "unofficial" fast time of the day with a lap in the high 1 min. 41 sec. range.
On the second day of the test, which was interrupted by 17 red flags, de Ferran's teammate, Helio Castroneves got behind the wheel of his #3 Marlboro Honda Reynard and bettered de Ferran's quick time with a lap in the low 1 min. 41 sec. range.
With two of the Team's three wins coming on road courses this season and the next four races on the FedEx Championship Series all contested on road courses, the future is looking bright for Marlboro Team Penske.
DE FERRAN ON ELKHART LAKE TEST
"We had a good test at Elkhart Lake although we really only got in a half day on the track. At the start of the day it took some time to dry the track and then being a green track it took a while for the track to come in. However, once we got running we had a very productive day. We were able to take away some of the questions we had about which way to go on the Marlboro car and I think we'll have a good baseline set-up when we arrive for the race in a couple of weeks."
GIL DE FERRAN REGAINS THIRD PLACE IN THE FEDEX CHAMPIONSHIP POINT
Gil de Ferran earned his third podium finish of the 2000 season last weekend in the Target Grand Prix of Chicago. After moving up the field to third place from a starting position of tenth, de Ferran ended up with 16 points putting him back in third place in the FedEx Championship point standings (nine points out of second). The #2 Marlboro Honda Reynard was well balanced all day and he was able to pass cars for position throughout the race. By the time de Ferran came in for his third and final pit stop (lap 160) he was running fifth. He rejoined the race in eighth and was able to work his way through the field to finish third.
