Jourdain takes sixth in provisional qualifying.
LONG BEACH, CA . . ..Team Rahal's Michel Jourdain Jr. took sixth on the provisional grid in the opening day of qualifying for Sunday's Grand Prix of Long Beach. Jourdain, currently second in the Champ Car World Series championship, was third quick on his first set of tires but he was unable to get a clean lap on his second set of Bridgestone tires and fell to sixth. He turned his fast lap of 101.896 mph on his sixth qualifying lap.
Jourdain and the Gigante team endured a slightly frustrating morning session which saw the team limited in their on track time due to an oil leak in their primary car. Jourdain finished the morning session eighth quickest.
"In the morning we had some problems and we didn't do many laps but it wasn't a huge setback because the track was so slick. I was really happy with my car this afternoon. It felt like it had some good potential. After the qualifying practice I didn't want to make any changes and as the track rubber came in the car picked up a lot of understeer. I thought the track was going to come to us but it didn't so we will have to make some changes for tomorrow. Hopefully the bad weather that is being forecast will hold off se we can make the car better and improve our starting position."
Points leader Paul Tracy claimed the provisional pole and clinched a front row starting position with a fast lap of 102.561 mph.
Qualifying for Sunday's Grand Prix of Long Beach will resume tomorrow afternoon on the streets of Long Beach, CA. SPEED will carry the qualifying session live starting at 4:30 PM EST.
