The Long Beach Grand Prix has for the United States the same value than the GP in the street of Monaco for the Europe.
It is simply the most prestigious and famous race of the season. Thus, scoring an outstanding performance takes an another dimension.
Simon Pagenaud did what was necessary to rank third after the qualifying sessions. Best rookie on the starting grid, Simon manages to follow the leaders during the first two-third of the race.
Unfortunately, his single-seater understeers in the 53th lap and hits the tires barrier. Noticing his machine is undamaged, the driver tries to resume his race, in vain. Eventually towed in his pit, Simon is helped by his team, whose mechanics managed to solve the issue of the gearbox. Back on track, Simon scores the fastest lap. Even with a final 14th place, Simon once again showed his top speed. The podium was close, and will be the aim at the next race !
Simon Pagenaud :
" Once again the final result turns out to be a pale image of the performance achieved this week-end, for my second Champ Car race. In the qualifying sessions, I challenged Will Power (Las Vegas winner) and Sebastien Bourdais (Triple champion and winner twice times in Long Beach). In racing conditions, I experienced some issues with the downshifts. It sometimes locked the rear wheels. That caused my accident. Then, I couldn't select any gear anymore. The team solved the problem in the pit. I resumed my race so, and scored the fastest lap, what is definitely positive. Now I have to use this pace to realize a good final result. Rendezvous obviously in Houston, next week-end !
