Herta Secures Pole

Long Beach (April 4, 1998) -- Bryan Herta and his teammate and team owner, Bobby Rahal, watched as the rain fell during qualifying Saturday and will start from the front row Sunday in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Herta qualified at 111.226 miles per hour in his Shell Reynard Ford Friday and his time was never challenged as a light rain fell throughout Saturday's qualifying session. Rahal was just .091 seconds behind at 111.028 mph in his Miller Lite Reynard Ford. Starting third in Sunday's Round 3 of the FedEx Championship Series will be Adrian Fernandez, who won last week's Budweiser 500 in the inaugural race at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan and qualified Friday at 110.982 mpg. Fernandez leads the PPG Cup Points standings.

Rounding out the top 5 are Brazilian Gualter Salles, in his second race this season in the SmithKline Beecham Reynard Ford who ran 110.941 mph in Friday's session and Gil de Ferran, who qualified at 110.906 mph in the Valvoline Cummins Reynard Honda.

Sunday's live race broadcast on ESPN in the United States, begins at 4 p.m. ET.
