A disappointing first day in Long Beach
Justin's Long Beach weekend got off to a disappointing start on Friday. In the morning practice session the #9 CDW/RSPORTS car was off the front-running pace due to braking issues. And during Friday afternoon's first qualifying session he was blocked on his good runs and also had to make an unscheduled stop to resolve an electrical problem.
In the end Justin managed only 7 timed laps out of his allotted 12 and ended up 10th fastest (1:09.553 (101.862 mph)). Will Power took provisional pole for Team Australia (1:07.920 (104.311 mph)), guaranteeing him a front-row starting position for Sunday's race.
The silver lining for Justin is that the RSPORTS team seems to have found a decent set-up to suit the bumpy Long Beach track. Alex Tagliani was 4th fastest in provisional qualifying in the #8 LXN2/RSPORTS car (1:08.304). Justin feels that Friday's results didn't reflect the #9 car's potential and is confident that he'll have a better day on Saturday.
"I'm very disappointed", he admitted. "I felt that the #9 CDW car was quicker then our showing today. We were quick earlier in the qualifying session, but we kept getting blocked. Our data shows that we would have been in the top three on our second timed laps during provisional qualifying. So, I'm very pleased with the potential, but disappointed that we could not get a clear lap today. Hopefully we'll have a good day tomorrow."
