Mario Dominguez and Paul Tracy See Mixed Results in Long Beach
Long Beach, California -- April 9, 2006 -- Forsythe Championship Racing's duo of Paul Tracy and Mario Dominguez came into Long Beach with high expectations after good results on the downtown streets last season. A first turn incident took Tracy out of the equation, but Dominguez improved from his fifth place starting spot to move into third spot briefly before cold tires cost him a podium finish as he crossed under the checkered flag in fourth.
Mario Dominguez, #7 INDECK Ford-Cosworth/Bridgestone/Lola -- Finished Fourth
"This was a strong way to start the season. I'm a little disappointed because we were very close to stepping on the podium. We were saving fuel for most of the race to make sure that we could stay out one lap longer than the guys in front of us. We managed to run quick and consistent laps and at the same time stay within our fuel mileage target and it paid off, we stayed out one more lap and came out in front of Tagliani. Unfortunately our tire choice didn't work very well. We were out on standard tires for the final stint and the rest of the guys around me were on the soft alternate Bridgestone Potenza tires so I on my out-lap I couldn't get off the hairpin as quickly as Alex and he got back by me. That cost me the opportunity to be on the podium. The start of the race was a mess. Nobody was giving anybody any room; I got to the braking zone and I had cars all around me. Paul was in front of me and both of us were off line on the dirty part of the track and I tapped his rear tire and sent him into Bruno (Junqueira). But I was able to get through it without any damage and run to the end for a good result."
Paul Tracy, #3 INDECK Ford-Cosworth/Bridgestone/Lola -- Did Not Finish
"Well, definitely not the way I wanted to start the season. I'm very disappointed because I know that we had a car good enough to finish on the podium. Yesterday I had a problem in qualifying so I had to start from the third row and got caught up in that big pileup in Turn 1. We all came up to the braking zone bunched up, and I was trying to get through on the inside when Mario tapped me from behind which sent me into Bruno and the tire wall with a few other cars. But, now we've got Houston coming up and hopefully we'll qualify up front so there's less chance of a first turn incident."
