LONG BEACH, Calif. - An unusual amount of red flags during qualifying had Coyne Racing-Team P.R.G. drivers Michael Krumm and Luiz Garcia Jr. seeing red as neither could put together a run fast enough to challenge for the pole for the 27th annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach today.

There were a total of four red flags during the 30-minute qualifying session, which is twice the norm according to CART pit note specialist Mark Tate. Krumm completed only 10 laps during qualifying, while Garcia had nine.

Despite this, Krumm comfortably qualified for his first Long Beach Grand Prix (and second FedEx CART Championship race overall), driving his Infineon-Dark Dog-Glashutte Lola-Ford/Cosworth to a time of 71.974 seconds (98.436 mph).

Garcia, who scored his first-ever CART championship point at Long Beach last season, continued his struggles this weekend, putting together a quick time of 76.483 seconds (97.852 mph).

Sunday's race begins at 1 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, and is 82 laps in length.

Quotes

"I didn't really put in a decent lap the entire weekend. This was a bad session because of all the red flags, but everyone else seemed to put in a good lap. Overall this has been a terrible weekend for me. I've been sick and it's been a wet weekend, but hey, I'm not looking for excuses. I'll just have to dig myself out of a hole tomorrow for the race and that can be done."
- Luiz Garcia Jr., Driver #21 Embratel-Chapeco-Dark Dog-Infineon Lola-Ford/Cosworth

"We didn't really have a lot of data or information for today, because we ended our practice early yesterday. Unfortunately, we also couldn't get any good laps in this qualifying session because it seemed like there was a red flag every other lap while we were running. As a result, I didn't have a chance to get a clean run."
- Michael Krumm, Driver #19 Infineon-Dark Dog-Glashutte Lola-Ford/Cosworth
