Vasser and Jourdain endure frustrating qualifying session at Mid-Ohio.

LEXINGTON, OH . . . The opening day of qualifying for the CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio proved to be an exercise in frustration with for Team Rahal and drivers Jimmy Vasser and Michel Jourdain Jr.

Vasser claimed 12th on the provisional grid and expressed frustration the he was unable to match the practice times he posted at the famed road course in a May test session. Vasser has four top-five starts at Mid-Ohio in the last six years.

Jourdain's qualifying efforts were thwarted by a faulty fuel pump which malfunctioned half-way through the qualifying session. Jourdain's car came to a stop on track which triggered a red flag and cost the Gigante team its fastest lap of the session. Jourdain was still on his initial qualifying run and his second fastest lap relegated him to the back of the provisional grid.

Qualifying will continue on Saturday afternoon for the CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. Sunday's race will be broadcast live on CBS (12:30 PM EDT).

Jimmy Vasser (#8 Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires) - "It was just a big disappointment today. We tested so well here earlier and then again last week at Portland for Ford. The Shell car just isn't doing as well as it did at the tests. That has us pretty confused. It's hard to say if it is the track conditions or something else. But we'll have to get the problems solved for Saturday. I know this car is capable of some fast times here. We'll keep our heads down and working hard with the engineers to improve the car this weekend."

Michel Jourdain Jr. (#9 Gigante Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires) - "It was a very bad day for the Gigante team. We can't seem to get a break in qualifying. It looks like we lost a fuel pump or something like that. Unfortunately we lost our fastest lap because of the red flag. We had too much understeer in the beginning and we couldn't get it out all the way. We will have some changes for Saturday when the track is faster. I just hope we can keep clear of the bad breaks. Between my qualifying and Jimmy's first lap stuff, it is time for our luck to change. We will be ready for Saturday."
