In what was by far one of the most exciting Champ Car races in recent history, the Herdez Competition capped their European trip with a second trip to the podium in as many races with sophomore pilot Mario Dominguez and brought home his teammate Roberto Moreno in the points in tenth. Dominguez led 47 laps of the 154-lap race distance before a five-second penalty assessed by CART for allegedly blocking Sebastien Bourdais dropped him back. The 55 crew battled back though, gaining positions on both of the final two pit stops and putting Dominguez back in the hunt during the final laps. Despite his best efforts, Dominguez wasn't able to re-pass Bourdais and finished a very close second.
It was an emotional day all around as two-time Champ Car series champion Alex Zanardi started off the day's ceremonies by completing the final laps of the American Memorial race which took place on September 15, 2001. Zanardi was just thirteen laps from the end of that race when an accident almost took his life. In a specially built car with hand controls, Zanardi lapped the circuit in close to competitive times to the roar of the fans and deafening sound of airhorns. He completed his duties as Grand Marshal of today's race by giving the command to start engines to the field of 19 Champ Car competitors.

I'm very happy - I had a lot of fun out there today. My pit crew did a great job all day - I didn't do such a great job getting into the pit box but they managed to adjust every time. I have to give them a lot of credit - they were my guardian angels today. For sure, I had one of the best cars out there today. Sebastien (Bourdais) and I had a lot of fun out there - it was very clean racing but very aggressive too. As far as the 5-second penalty we got from CART for blocking, as far as I'm concerned I didn't do anything wrong. Sebastien did the same thing later in the race which is okay with me because we were just racing. The German fans are the best! You can hear them cheering and the air horns every time you come down the front straight. This is for sure my new favorite track!
Dominguez's back to back podium efforts mark the first time in team history that one of its drivers has achieved this mark.
Roberto Moreno - Driver, Car 4
I'm very happy for my teammate Mario Dominguez and the whole Herdez Competition team. It's great to see Mario up on the podium again and it's great for the team. Unfortunately, we didn't get it all together on my car today. We had the speed at the end of the race but at that point I was already a lap down. The good news is that we still made some points for the championship.
