Yoong mixes with the top runners, with a 5th fastest time in the Warm-up of the German 500

Lausitz, Germany - May 11, 2003 - Today's Raceday Warm-up session saw the young Malaysian, Alex Yoong, mixing with the fast guys as he clocked a 5th fastest time of the session with 37.476s, a time which would have placed him 5th as well, if done at qualifying yesterday.

Considering that the German 500 is the first time Yoong set foot on an oval track, perhaps it was a prudent program that the Dale Coyne Racing team and Yoong employed to get up to speed gradually. Yoong's rapid rise through the German 500 time rankings had been 18th in the free practice yesterday, improving to 13th in qualifying and now 5th in the warm-up.

Yoong's qualifying time yesterday was one second from pole time, which in oval terms, is an eternity. His warm-up time gap is now only just over a tenth of a second from the fastest time set by Oriol Servia and less than a hundredth of a second from Bruno Junqueira in fourth. The top 6 times in this morning's warm-up were seperated by less than two tenths of a second.

Yoong, pleased with his progress, said after the warm-up, "That was very satisfying. The team gave me a taller top gear to try out for the warm-up and suddenly the car was alot free-er. It was especially good as the time was achieved with no drafting employed. We are OK for the race."
