LAS VEGAS, Nev. (September 26, 2004) -- "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." At least that's what Rocketsports have to hope for following the Bridgestone 400 Presented by Corona. Due to circumstances beyond their control, Champ Car drivers Alex Tagliani and Guy Smith were each disappointed with their 14th and 17th place finishes at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
In the No.8 Johnson Controls Lola, Tagliani started 12th and finished 14th three laps behind the lead. Tagliani fell behind after he was issued a 'stop and go' penalty for failing to pit within the 37 lap mandatory pit window. Rocketsports protested the call claiming Tagliani could not enter the closed pit lane following a yellow flag thrown on lap 37. Extremely disappointed with the call and end result, Tagliani was at least positive about the performance of the No. 8 Johnson Controls car. Tagliani remains in fifth position in the Champ Car World Series standings with 209 points. Protest outcome still pending.
Guy Smith, in the No.17 Rocketsports/Microchip Lola, made his fifth Champ Car start from 14th position on the grid and finished 17th. Engine trouble ended Smith's race after 123 laps on the 1.5 mile oval. "The No.17 Rocketsports Microchip car was handling fine on the oval and the Bridgestone tires were gripping the track just as I needed them to. We had good lap times and the car was good in traffic. I was able to get close to other cars and maintain my line. It was tough, but I was able to gain some positions until the engine gave way. It was a fresh engine for the weekend and we expected to do well, but this is just unfortunate." Smith has 32 points and currently ranks 18th in the Champ Car World Series.
Watch Smith and Tagliani round the oval in Las Vegas. The Bridgestone 400 Presented by Corona at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be broadcast on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at 4:00 PM (ET) on Spike TV.
