Double Down in The Desert Deals Vasser Top Five Drive; Gonzalez 10th in Superspeedway Debut
LAS VEGAS (September 25, 2004) -- Las Vegas' Jimmy Vasser (#12 Gulfstream Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) picked up his fourth top five result of the season with a fifth place run under the light's tonight in Champ Car's first visit to the 1.5-mile oval at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Teammate Roberto Gonzalez (#21 NII Holdings, Inc. Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) made it a double top 10 for PKV Racing after the first-year Mexican pilot finished 10th in his superspeedway debut.
Vasser, recognized by open wheel aficionados as one of the best oval racers ever to strap into a 750hp Champ Car, backed that theory up once again tonight with a strong fifth place drive under clear desert skies.
"The car was just really loose at the end, and we weren't really able to get the late charge to the front we were looking for," said Vasser, who moved back into the top 10 in points with 171 championship markers. "Maybe a podium slipped away tonight, but who knows. The PKV Racing guys did an awesome job all night long on the Gulfstream car, giving me solid stops throughout the race. It's another strong day for us in the point standings, so we'll take it."
After gridding a career best 10th, Gonzalez was able to stay competitive throughout the 166-lap event, maintain his presence in the 18 car field, and score another positive finish in the #21 PKV Racing Lola.
"It was a rough race. The car was great for the first half of the race," said Gonzalez, who recorded the fifth top 10 of his rookie campaign. "After that, everybody was able to drive around me, so I just tried sticking to the pack and let it play out. It was difficult to stay with the group, but the changes the team made helped a lot, and we were able to get another top 10 drive tonight. I guess I'm learning to like these ovals, but road racing is still my first love."
Next up for PKV Racing is the always popular 2.795-mile street circuit in Surfers Paradise, Australia October 24th (Spike TV, 4:00 pm ET/PT) for Round 13 of the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered By Ford, the Lexmark Indy 300. Vasser will return to Australia once again as a former champion after taking the checkers in the 1996 event.
