Laps Led

(July 15, 1998) -- Fourteen times in 295 CART events, a driver has led every lap of an event. Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) nearly did it last year, leading 93 of 95 laps en route to his second CART career victory. Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) has done it six times - more than anyone else - and two of those took place at Toronto. In 1991 and '92, Andretti led every lap of competition at Toronto, 206 in all.

Andretti, who leads CART's career list with 5,728 laps led, has led a total of 401 laps in 11 previous starts at Toronto. He also led flag-to-flag at Detroit in 1990, Laguna Seca in '91 and '92, and Australia in '94, a race which ended 10 laps prior to its scheduled conclusion due to darkness. The last CART driver to lead every lap of an event was Paul Tracy (KOOL Reynard Honda), who led 84 laps en route to victory at Laguna Seca in 1994.
