MOTEREY, CALIFORNIA . . . Tragedy struck the Laguna Seca Raceway when 27-year-old Team Penske rookie Gonzalo Rodriguez was killed in a Saturday morning practice crash. As a result of the incident the CART driver's voted unanimously to pass on their opportunity to qualify their cars for Sunday's Shell 300. As a result of the driver's tribute, Shell Champ Car driver Bryan Herta will start on the pole tomorrow with his Friday qualifying lap of 117.903 mph.

The pole is Herta's third straight at Laguna Seca and the seventh of his Champ Car career. In five CART starts at Monterey Herta has never failed to start in the front row.

Max Papis, Herta's teammate, qualified the Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Reynard third based on his Friday qualifying lap of 116.911 mph.

The Shell 300 will be run at historic Laguna Seca Raceway on Sunday at 3:00 PM EDT and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
