MONTEREY, Calif. (June 14, 2003) -- The polewinning car of Michel Jourdain Jr. (#9 Gigante Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) failed post-qualifying technical inspection after Saturday's final qualifying for the Grand Prix of Monterey, disallowing the day's top time and removing the series points leader from the pole for Sunday's race.
The Jourdain car was found to have been underweight, causing his Saturday time of 1:09.530 to be taken off the books. That meant that Patrick Carpentier's (#32 Player's/Indeck Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) effort of 1:09.575 (115.800 mph) was the fastest of the day and awarded him the fourth pole of his career and first of the season.
Jourdain will have to stand on his Friday qualifying time of 1:10.970, which will put him 13th on the grid for Sunday's race. He will also forfeit the championship point that he was awarded for winning the pole, dropping his series-leading total to 77. Carpentier is awarded the championship point, boosting his total to 49.
