RECAP OF LAST YEAR'S RACE

Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) clinched his first PPG Cup and Target/Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) drove to his first victory of the season at the 1997 Texaco/Havoline 300, feature event of the Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca Raceway. Vasser posted a 0.543 second victory over runner-up Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes). Zanardi, who finished third, joined Jacques Villeneuve as the only drivers in FedEx Championship Series history to win the Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year award, followed by the PPG Cup, in their first two years in the series. The event was run without any full-course caution periods, marking the first time since Al Unser Jr.'s (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) victory at Cleveland in 1994 that a FedEx Championship Series event had been run full-caution free. Vasser improved from seventh to third place in the FedEx Championship Series standings with 128 points while Zanardi's third-place effort gave him an insurmountable 195-154 lead over second-place Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda) entering the season-ending Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota at California Speedway.
