Dario Franchitti is on the provisional pole with a time of 1:01.067 (104.993 mph). Kanaan, who achieved his time in today's first of two qualifying groups, moves into the fast group for final qualifying on Saturday with Franchitti.
Practice resumes Saturday morning with final qualifying set to begin at 1:45 p.m. PDT. Race time Sunday is 1 p.m. PDT and it will be televised live by ABC-TV.
"We had a lot of car today, better than our qualifying time showed. I'm very happy, but I think we had a lap of about two-tenths of a second better than what we had. Jimmy (Vasser) ran out of gas ahead of me on the very last lap of our session and he did everything he could to get out of my way. But we ended up crossing each other up enough to slow me down. It wasn't his fault by any means. At any rate, we are in the fast group for Saturday, and that usually makes all the difference in the world. I don't know if we have a car for the pole, but you never know if the conditions will play right into our favor. Overall, we're happy with the way the weekend is going."
