Brake problems forced an early end to the day of Tony Kanaan and his #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard in today's Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca Raceway. Kanaan started 14th and placed 22nd after stopping on Lap 69 of a scheduled 83. He was running 18th at the time. Kanaan lost his clutch prior to the first round of pit stops. He was running 13th when he came in for tires and fuel for the first time on Lap 27. The car stalled as he was trying to exit and he subsequently lost nine spots in the order, falling back to 22nd. He moved up to 14th by the second round of stops.
Helio Castroneves won the event, his third win this season. The next stop on the 20-race CART FedEx Championships Season for 2000 is next weekend's Round 17, the Motorola 200, at Gateway International Raceway outside St. Louis.
"What a day. It turned out to be one of those days you want to forget, which is really sad because it's here on one of my best racetracks. All I have to say is, 'meet me in St. Louis.'"
