Tony Kanaan qualified his #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard 12th on the provisional starting grid for Sunday's Grand Prix of Monterey. In this afternoon's first of two provisional qualifying sessions, Kanaan recorded a fast lap of 1 minute, 9.389 seconds (an average of 116.111 mph) over the 2.238-mile Laguna Seca Raceway hillside road course. He was able to complete just four laps during the 30-minute session as a clutch failure on his fifth lap forced the team to call it a day. Nonetheless, the time was good enough to put him in Saturday's fast group for final qualifying. Kanaan, who was fifth in today's morning practice session, qualified second here last year for Forsythe Championship Racing.
Helio Castroneves is on the provisional pole after clocking a lap of 1:07.722 (118.969 mph). Practice resumes Saturday morning with final qualifying set to begin at 1:45 p.m. PDT.
"We definitely have a good car here that is capable of starting up front. We didn't even have a chance to get into a groove before we had to stop for the day, which is very unfortunate. I think I have a car that would have been capable of running a 1:08.9 or so. That's what I was predicting after this morning's practice run. But the good thing is we still have Saturday to qualify, and we'll be running with the fast group. We'll make some adjustments and I'm confident we'll move up in the order ... if we can avoid problems. The car is very good, and I always feel very good here."
