Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard posted the ninth-fastest time in practice today for Sunday's season-ending 500-mile race at the California Speedway. Kanaan toured the 2-mile oval in 30.765 seconds (an average of 237.426 mph) on the closing laps of today's 90-minute practice session. It was the only on-track activity of the day for the Champ Cars as this morning's opening practice session was rained out. Juan Montoya recorded the fastest time of the day at 30.152 seconds (242.253 mph).
Practice resumes at 8 a.m. PDT Saturday with qualifying set for 10:45 a.m. Weather forecasts call for dry weather until late Sunday. Race time Sunday is 11:30 a.m. PDT with a live broadcast set for ESPN.
"I got a little help on that fast lap, but it's all in a day's work. It helped that the weather stayed cool. The hotter it gets, the more understeer you tend to have in the car. Even so, I was fighting understeer in that session. We didn't get to do any long runs. We decided instead to try some different aero packages, some different side pods. And we scrubbed some extra tires for the race in case it rains tomorrow. I hope it stays cool, but we'll take whatever weather we get. It's a 500-mile race and anything can happen. It was good today to put our car in the top 10, but over the long haul, today doesn't really matter. Sunday is the most important day, like it is every weekend. But, so far, so good."
