INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 10)-Michel Jourdain Jr. will return to the CART FedEx Championship Series as driver of the No. 16 Herdez Bettenhausen entry, it was announced today.

Jourdain, who made history in 1996 as the youngest starter of a CART event at age 19 years, six months and 12 days of age, has driven Herdez-sponsored cars since his debut drive at Long Beach. Herdez and Jourdain joined the Bettenhausen Motorsports team last year.

The team conducted a test to evaluate drivers last November at Sebring International Raceway before making a final decision on the driver for 2001.

"We have made the decision to have Michel drive for us," said Keith Wiggins, managing director of the team. "With all of the engine failures we experienced last year, Michel had a frustrating season. We want to give him another chance.

"At the same time, we want to emphasize that Mario Dominguez, the other Herdez driver we tested, did an excellent job. He will remain very much involved in our future racing program."

The 24-year-old Jourdain has made 81 CART starts in five seasons of competition. His best finish was seventh at Elkhart Lake in 1999, which he duplicated at Surfers Paradise in 2000. The native of Mexico City is the nephew of 1989 CART "Rookie of the Year" Bernard Jourdain and son of Michel Jourdain Sr., who ran in CART events at Mexico City in 1980 and 1981.
