WINNER SELECTED FOR THIRD ANNUAL JEFF KROSNOFF SCHOLARSHIP
LA CANADA, Calif., (April 5, 1999) -- It was announced today that Vintage High School senior Margot K. Mendelson of Napa, Calif. is the recipient of the third annual Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship. The scholarship will award $10,000 to Harvard College for the tuition and expenses of Mendelson, who will attend the university this fall to pursue studies in English and Political Science.
Tracy Krosnoff, wife of the late Jeff Krosnoff, will present the scholarship to Margot Mendelson at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Charity Ball on Wednesday, April 14, 1999.
"Through the scholarship we are able to make a contribution toward the bright future of a deserving student in Jeff's name," Tracy Krosnoff said. "Our hope is that the recipient will become a positive force and inspiration for others just as Jeff was."
Mendelson's essay, titled "Chatting with Jane Austen and Nelson Mandela," was selected from more than 600 students who applied for the 1999 Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship. Applicants for the scholarship were required to submit a 1,000-2,000 word essay about two or three people, real or fictitious, that they would like to spend one day with and the inspiration they would gain from this encounter. Students were also required to be a senior at a California high school, maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0, and display outstanding community citizenship.
This scholarship was established in memory of race-car driver Jeff Krosnoff, who was tragically killed in a racing accident on July 14, 1996. This year marks the third of what will be an annual award given out to a deserving California high school senior who shows the same spirit and enthusiasm for life that Jeff showed every day.
The Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship is a reality due to the generous contributions made by the following companies: Bridgestone/Firestone Trust Fund, California Speedway/Penske Automotive Group, Championship Auto Racing Teams, Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach, MCI Worldcom, Molstar Sports and Entertainment, OCC Sports, Pfanner Communications, Precision Preparation Inc., Toyota Motor Sales USA, and Valvoline.
