Driver of the Year:
SPEEDTV.com hosts fan vote for 1st Quarter nominees.
Racing fans will get the opportunity to participate in the balloting for the most prestigious award in motorsports, Speed Channel Presents the DRIVER OF THE YEAR for the first quarter 2003, by going online.
Leading drivers from the major North American auto racing series like Brandon Bernstein (NHRA), Kurt Busch (NASCAR), Matt Kenseth (NASCAR), Tony Kanaan (Indy Racing League), Danny Lasoski (IROC & World of Outlaws), Paul Tracy (Champ Car), and Michael Waltrip (NASCAR) are among the drivers nominated for the voting.
In its 37th year the DRIVER OF THE YEAR's award for this quarter will be determined by a vote of the 18-member panel of blue ribbon auto racing journalists and broadcasters and one vote based on the cumulative tally of fans voting at www.speedtv.com.
"We want to give fans an opportunity to evaluate and reward excellence not limited to points standings in any one series," said DRIVER OF THE YEAR, president, Barry Schmoyer, adding "and there is no better place to do that than the website for the sports network, SPEED Channel, that covers all forms of auto racing."
The top six vote-getters from the Speedtv.com online voting will also be included on a single final ballot along with the top six overall from the 18 media panel members. The winner will be determined based on the results of this final ballot to be voted on by the Panel on April 16, 2003.
At the end of the year a final vote will be held for the 2003 DRIVER OF THE YEAR. "The quarterly vote took on added importance last year when it was used as the first tie-breaker in the history of the award," Schmoyer explained.
The winner of the first quarter voting will be given a trophy and a Maurice Lacroix Swiss Watch, the official watch of the DRIVER OF THE YEAR, to commemorate the honor.
