Houston, Tex., Sept. 29, 2000 - In his first outing ever on the streets of Houston, and his best qualifying effort on a CART road or street course to-date Walker Racing driver Shinji Nakano qualified in 11th place during provisional qualifying for the Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston. Nakano, in the #5 avex/Honda/Reynard, is a veteran of Formula One, but a rookie in the CART FedEx Championship Series. Shinji's fast lap of 91.188 mph, 1:00:284 secs. was only .850 of a second behind that of provisional pole-sitter Dario Franchitti. "The car set-up feels very good," said Shinji. "This track suits my driving style, and I was able to get some good clean laps in. We have a good base to work with for the rest of the weekend now." The Walker Racing team has a history of good starting positions at Houston. Last season Walker Racing drivers Gil de Ferran and Naoki Hattori qualified sixth and seventh respectively. "We had a very good starting set-up and worked our way through engineer Al Bodey's list of improvements," said owner Derrick Walker. "The car is pretty decent and Shinji adapted to the track very quickly." The Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston will take place on Sunday, Oct. 1 and will be broadcast on ABC at 4 p.m. (ET.) Walker Racing's corporate sponsor partners are avex, Alpine, Mitsuba, SpeedWRX.com, Dell Computer Corporation, NGK, St. Elmo Steakhouse, Honda, Reynard and Firestone.
