BRACK AND PAPIS BATTLE FOR QUALIFYING POSITION

QUALIFYING TIMES - Saturday, September 30, 2000 Driver Lap Time Speed 1. Gil de Ferran 58.757-sec. 93.558 mph 2. Dario Franchitti 58.843-sec. 93.421 mph 3. Jimmy Vasser 58.844-sec. 93.420 mph 13. Kenny Brack 59.383-sec. 92.572 mph 17. Max Papis 59.739-sec. 92.020 mph

The good karma of Friday practice and qualifying didn't carry over to Saturday for the Team Rahal cars. Both Max Papis and Kenny Brack struggled with their set up in the morning practice and finished 16th and 17th respectively in the morning session.
Papis Friday qualifying time pushed him into the slow qualifying session for Saturday. Papis was able to temporarily improve his position with a better qualifying time but the second groups access to better track conditions dropped the Miller Lite car to 17th on the starting grid.
Brack held hopes that he would be able to make a run at the pole but the traffic of the faster session hampered the Shell car's qualifying effort. Brack was never able to get a clear lap until his last lap of the session. His last lap was his fastest lap of the weekend, but by then his tires were worn and he was unable to challenge the pole time of series points leader Gil de Ferran.
#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard "We got stuck in the first qualifying session again and it is very difficult to move up to the faster group on the street circuits. We have had a traction problem all weekend. We keep spinning the tires and the front end has been unstable. We have had to soften the car so much that it has made the car very difficult to drive. We did improve the car quite a bit this morning but the traffic is tough here. So much of qualifying is timing. You have to get the right lap on the right tires. Our timing was off today. I have had good runs here the last two years and I intend to have another good run here tomorrow."
#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard "It was very frustrating out there today. I just couldn't get a clear lap in qualifying. The car was better this afternoon but the traffic was just too heavy. Every time I got ready with new tires I would run up on somebody. I finally got a clear lap on my last lap and that was my best time. I am pretty disappointed because we were fourth on Friday and I expected to be right up there again today. We didn't have a fast enough car when it counted. I think we can be better for the race."
