Construction impacts current race course

HOUSTON (November 5, 2001) -- The CART FedEx Championship Series and the management of the Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix announced a date change for the next event.

Due to construction impacting the current racing venue, the Grand Prix has requested a date change to Spring, 2003. "Some of the current race course, following this year's event, ceased to exist due to the construction of the new arena and the new hotel," said Jim Melvin, executive vice president and general manager of the Grand Prix.

"In consultation with the city officials, we mutually determined we did not have enough lead time to complete the development and proposed changes to the course in time for a 2002 race."

CART has not yet announced the final date, but Houston race organizers are confident the request will be honored. Houston is one of the premiere events on the CART schedule.
