Texaco GP of Houston FedEx CART Championship Series Friday practice October 2, 1998 -- Houston, TX Mike Stucker -- Motorsport News International

Green flag for this morning's practice session waved at 10:30. Track temperature of 101 degrees F is reported by Firestone engineers. The first laps for CART Champcars on the new 1.68 mile street circuit are not without incident. Andre Ribeiro slides off at turn 5, but is sent on his way by CART safety workers. The course is red flagged when Helio Castro- Neves and Mauricio Gugelmin make contact, also in turn 5. Both cars are able to drive to the pits under their own power. Paul Tracy brushes the wall at turn 3, but incurs no damage. Ribeiro is off course again, this time at turn 3. He's not done yet, as he's off again 12 minutes later in turn 1. Tony Kanaan and Bryan Herta will also slide into the turn 3 run-off area before the session ends. Adrian Fernandez is fastest at 1:01.785 for a speed of 88.973 mph, .102 seconds quicker than Christian Fittipaldi.

One of the happiest drivers at the end of practice is Dario Franchitti, who high-fives several team members when he climbs out of the car. Although only eighth fastest at 1:02.397, Dario is very happy with the setup and felt the laps were very good considering that they never changed tires during the session.
