The new street track in downtown Houston received good reviews from CART's Champ car drivers last weekend. Everyone seemed to agree that the track was reasonably smooth and wide with one or two passing places while the newly-manufactured walls and safety fences were highly praised. The drivers also agreed that the extremely tight and circuitous pitlane exit must be revised for next year's race.

"The new pavement most of the way 'round is quite good," commented winner Dario Franchitti. "I think with age it will get better, and there are a couple of concrete patches that are quite rough and lack grip in the dry that need to be paved. The walls and safety fences are terrific. Full marks to the organizers for setting new standards there."

Second-placed Alex Zanardi said he agreed with Franchitti on those points, but added that a lengthened backstraight would make for higher speeds and more passing. "I think the straight is too short," Zanardi said. "They need to add another block or two to the backstraight so the cars would be going faster at the end of the backstraight and there would be a better chance to outbrake somebody."
