Marlboro Team Penske's Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves staged their own private battle in qualifying today for Sunday's Molson Indy Toronto, as the two Honda-powered drivers traded fast times on the streets of Exhibition Place. But in the final minutes, it was defending series champion de Ferran just edging out his younger teammate by the slim margin of six-hundredths of a second.

Tony Kanaan posted his best qualifying run in the last three races as the Mo Nunn Racing driver was fourth fastest today, although teammate Alex Zanardi struggled with handling problems and will line up 24th. In similar fashion, owner/driver Adrian Fernandez will start seventh in his Honda-powered Reynard, but teammate Shinji Nakano crashed his primary car and will start 26th.

The Team KOOL Green duo of Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy ended up sixth and eighth, while Team Motorola's Michael Andretti was a disappointed 13th after brushing the wall during what otherwise would have been his best lap.

Gil de Ferran (#1 Marlboro Team Penske Honda) Pole qualifier, his 1st pole this season and 2nd career pole in Toronto; Honda's 4th pole of 2001 and 4th consecutive Toronto pole: "We haven't had too many smooth weekends so far this year, for one reason or another. But this weekend, right from the start, both the car and the engine have run quite well. And the battle with Helio was quite exciting, I thought. The winner tomorrow will be the one who makes the fewest mistakes. So hopefully I'll break my `unlucky' streak here."
