Seeking his third pole of the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series season, Gil de Ferran led the way in opening practice at Road America for Sunday's Motorola 220. The Honda-powered driver topped another competitive field here at the 4.0 mile Wisconsin road course with 13 drivers - a total of half the field - all turning times within a second of de Ferran's mark of 1:41.055.

Dario Franchitti and Michael Andretti, both previous Champ Car winners here, also posted top five times today. Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves, a winner three times already this season including last week at Mid-Ohio, ended the day eighth and ninth.

Former series champion Alex Zanardi and last year's winner here, Paul Tracy, both had their days cut short by mechanical ills, while the Fernandez Racing duo of Adrian Fernandez and Shinji Nakano continue to work on the handling of their Honda Reynards. There is a chance of rain tomorrow here in eastern Wisconsin, however final practice will take place rain or shine at 10:00 a.m. with qualifying at 1:45 p.m.

Gil de Ferran (#1 Marlboro Team Penske Honda) Fastest in practice today: "The car is handling really well and we had a very smooth day today. I'm very happy with our progress so far this weekend, but we're certainly aware that we will have to keep improving tomorrow. Everyone is so close and the series is so competitive that you have to be constantly improving. There is never a given on who will be quick each weekend. You can always expect a variety of drivers to be at the top of the (time) charts."
