De Ferran Again on the Front Row

For the fifth consecutive time this season, Honda-powered Gil de Ferran qualified on the front row today for Sunday's Honda Indy 300 here in Surfers Paradise, Australia. The defending series champion currently leads Kenny Brack by 26 points, and could clinch his second consecutive title by finishing ahead of his rival in tomorrow's 300-kilometer run.

De Ferran headed the time sheets twice during the 30-minute qualifying session, but was beaten in the final moments by Roberto Moreno. Meanwhile, the Team Green trio of Paul Tracy, Dario Franchitti and Michael Andretti had the team's best combined qualifying effort of the season, running fourth through sixth today.

Further back, teammates Adrian Fernandez and Shinji Nakano also qualified alongside each other, while Mo Nunn Racing's Tony Kanaan was forced into his backup car for qualifying after a crash in his primary machine in the morning practice session.

Gil de Ferran (#1 Marlboro Team Penske Honda): "I knew I had to get out and do a good time on my first set of tires. I didn't get the best time I could have, but it was good enough to put us on top early. Then the second set took a bit longer to come in. Once they did, I was on a very good lap, but then the red flag came out (for a crash by Max Papis) and that was it. Congratulations to Roberto (Moreno), he was quite fast today and deserves the pole."
