Defending champion Gil de Ferran has started the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series right where he left off at the end of last season, at the top of the fleld. The Honda-powered Marlboro Team Penske driver was quickest in today's opening practice sessions at the brand new Fundidora Park circuit in Monterrey, Mexico.

Teammate Helio Castroneves also turned in a strong effort today, finishing third overall in the 78-car field. Returning to Honda power after one season Tony Kanaan was eighth for Mo Nunn Racing, with Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti just behind.

In addition to placing four drivers in the top ten, Shinji Nakano was 11th fasted for the new Fernandez Racing team, headed by owner/driver Adrian Fernandez, with Team Motorola's Michael Andretti 12th to give Honda drivers six of the top twelve places today.

The 28-car field will qualify tomorrow at 1:45 pm, with a sellout crowd expected lor Sunday's inaugural Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix.

Gil de Ferran (#2 Marlboro Team Penske Honda) Fastest in practice today, defending CART FedEx Serlss Champion: "It's only Friday, but still this was a pretty good day for us. The team did just a fantastic job. I'm very happy to back in a car today after almost a month off [resting minor injuries suffered in a pair of test crashes at Phoenix and Homestead]. That meant the car had to be good right out of the trailer for us and -thanks to the guys - it was."
