Despite missing the morning practice session, Honda-powered Dario Franchitti still managed to set the quick time in opening day practice for Sunday's Grand Prix of Detroit. Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was fifth fastest today, with Marlboro Team Penske teammate Gil de Ferran also solidly in the top ten at 8th quickest overall.

Honda teams elected not to take part in the morning practice, while Ford teams ran only the final 15 minutes after CART FedEx Championship Series officials introduced a 3/4-inch spacer fitted between the turbocharger popoff valve and the top of the engine. According to both Honda and Ford officials, this change was instituted without prior notification or proper testing.

After continued discussions between CART, the participating engine manufacturers and teams, all drivers took part in today's second session, although Honda and Ford Cosworth have protested the use of the pop off valve spacer.

Dario Franchitti (#27 Team KOOL Green Honda) Quickest in practice today: "It's great to be fastest on Friday, but we need to do it again tomorrow when it really counts. I've got to hand it to Iain (Watt), my engineer. Team KOOL Green really had a good set up today for running a fast lap. This is not the sort of track where you want to be starting in the back of field, it's just so difficult to pass here. We'll probably go back to our original setup for race day."
