The only current owner/driver in the CART FedEx Championship Series, Adrian Fernandez led the Honda-powered field in today's opening practice sessions for Sunday's Target Grand Prix of Chicago. The championship runner up last season, Fernandez has run well on short ovals this season, qualifying sixth at Nazareth and finishing fifth at Milwaukee earlier this year. He also has a third place finish to his credit this year, scored earlier this month in Toronto.

Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves continued his strong season today, running just a hundredth of a second off the pace of Fernandez, with former two-time champion Alex Zanardi also posting a good result today, another three-hundredths of a second back and sixth overall.

Four Honda-powered drivers were grouped together in mid-field, led by Dario Franchitti, while Paul Tracy fought handling problems today and Michael Andretti's run was cut short by mechanical problems. Qualifying tomorrow is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. CDT, with same-day television coverage on ESPN-2.

Adrian Fernandez (#51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Honda) 4th fastest today: "It's been a good day. The car was fast right out of the box and we just have to keep improving as the weekend goes along. We did both long runs today to prepare for the race and some simulated qualifying runs. So far I think we have a good package."
