Herdez Competition Sebring Test Shortened
INDIANAPOLIS (January 24, 2002) - A pretty good day that could have been just a bit better seemed to be the general consensus amongst the Herdez Competition crew as they packed up to leave Sebring International Raceway today after a single day of testing with CART FedEx Championship Series rookie Mario Domínguez.
Domínguez completed 82 laps around the 1.62-mile circuit, posting a best time of 51.3 seconds on just the seventh lap out of the box. But engine problems late in the day thwarted the team's efforts and sent them packing for home a little earlier than expected.
"We were just getting to the interesting bits", said Managing Director Keith Wiggins. "It's too bad because Mario was quick right away today and we had plans to try out a few more things before the day was over. So we didn't get as much accomplished as we had hoped, but the day was still valuable."
Domínguez continues on his learning curve in the Champ Car and the return to Sebring helped him get a better feel for this changeable track. "I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get quite as far on our plan for the day as we would have liked. I felt that the car was up to speed right away and we were working through a series of different changes to the car that felt good. I was pretty happy overall and, for sure, the track was faster today than yesterday. I think we could have brought the time down more if we had had the rest of the day to work at it."
The team returns home on Friday to begin final preparations for CART's upcoming Sneak Preview test and media event at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. The four day event, February 7th through the 10th, will encompass two full days of press conferences, media events, photo shoots and pre-season interviews plus two days of on-track work for the entire field of FedEx Series competitors.
