Honda Grand Prix of Monterey featuring the Shell 300
Sunday, October 14, 2001
Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca, Monterey, California
2.238-mile permanent road course
Herdez Bettenhausen #16 Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Firestone
A promising start to race day at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca for Michel Jourdain Jr. was cut short on lap 18 of 83. Bryan Herta's disqualification in technical inspection yesterday afternoon had moved the Herdez Bettenhausen entry into 15th starting position and in the final 30-minute warm up session this morning, Jourdain had posted the fastest time, tied with Helio Castroneves of Team Penske, at 71.908 seconds (112.043 mph average). Hopes were high for a strong finish in today's Shell 300.
But on lap 18, Roberto Moreno spun off in turn five and kicked up a significant amount of dirt and smoke, obscuring the view of the drivers behind him. As Michel came through the area, he got off the racetrack and tagged the wall on the left side of the track, damaging the left front suspension of the #16 Ford-Cosworth/Lola.
Michel Jourdain, Jr.
"There was lots of smoke and dirt everywhere and I really couldn't see anything. I was following behind Bruno (Junqueira) and I thought I saw him go left so I went left too. When I came out of the smoke, I was in the dirt and then into the wall. It's really a shame because we were doing really well with our fuel mileage and we were in pretty good shape heading into the first pit stop."
