Honda Indy 300 - Round 20 the CART FedEx Championship Series
Saturday, October 27, 2001
Surfers Paradise, Queensland Australia
2.795-mile/4.498-km, 12-turn temporary street course
Track Record: 1999 Dario Franchitti 1:31.703 109.724 mph
Herdez Bettenhausen #16 Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Firestone
For years the Queensland Tourism Bureau advertised with the line "Beautiful One Day, Perfect The Next". Well, it wasn't beautiful yesterday but it was close to perfect today with clear skies and that famous Australian sun beating down on this beachside resort town.
The first session of qualifying was interrupted by four red flag full-course stoppages, forcing the session to run over its scheduled 30-minute time period in order to achieve the minimum 20-minutes of green flag time. Michel set the fourth fastest time in the first group.
Speed: 107.045 mph
Michel Jourdain Jr. - Driver
"It was pretty hard to get into a rhythm out there with all of the red flags during our session. I think I only got maybe four or five timed laps in because of all of the stops. The worst part is that when that happens to the first group, usually the second group runs their full 30 minutes without a problem!
"I think we did a good job as a team today. It was very crucial to get a good lap in at the very end of that session and I was pleased with the result. We can still make some improvements in the car for tomorrow but overall, I think we are in good shape."
(The Honda Indy 300 organizers announced the Saturday attendance was 74,858 up over 5,000 from last year and a new record.)
"From the car, you do get a sense of how many people are here at the track as you are going down the long straight, you can see the faces of the people lined up at the fences. It's just fantastic."
* The Honda Indy 300 marks Jourdain's 100th start in the CART FedEx Championship Series, his 97th consecutive start (beginning at Vancouver in 1996), and his 39th start with Herdez Bettenhausen.
* At the Harrah's 500 presented by Toyota at the Michigan International Speedway, Jourdain scored the first podium of his Champ Car career with a 3rd place finish.
* Jourdain currently stands 22nd in the Drivers Championship with 24 points.
