Motorsport.com -- Hank Thorp, former Chief Steward for the Indy Lights series, passed away peacefully in California on Saturday, October 20. Thorp had been battling cancer for almost a year. His daughters were with him at the time of his death.

Thorp was one of the people behind the growth of the Indy Lights in the early years. At the end of the 1997 season, he retired. Drivers who raced under his leadership were Greg Moore, Paul Tracy, Tony Kanaan, Helio Castroneves, and Cristiano da Matta (CART) and Andre Ribeiro, Robbie Buhl, Felipe Giaffone, Greg Ray and Airton Dare (IRL).

Thorp is remembered by those he knew for his humor, comraderie and caring.

According to the family, Thorp requested that there would be no wake or service. Rememberances may be made in his name to The American Cancer Society, The American Lung Association, or your favoriate charity.

We extend our sympathy to Hank Thorp's family and friends.
